Carrier or Dockworker

Object: Carrier or Dockworker
Location: Friedensbrücke
District: Sachsenhausen
Artist: Meunier, Constantin
Technique: Bronze
Date: 1893
Occasion: The sculpture was acquired in 1906 and erected in 1910.
On the eastern side of the Friedensbrücke on the Sachsenhausen side stands the life-sized naturalistic bronze "Carrier" (1893) by Belgian artist Constantin Meunier. The worker on the bridgehead radiates confidence and, despite his attitude of pathos, appears natural. He rests both hands on his hips, head turned towards the right shoulder, with a look of determination on his face. A second sculpture by Meunier, the "Sower" (1890), stands in the Nordend-district, on the south-west entrance of Günthersburgpark. Both sculptures were donated by Leo Gans, the director of the Cassella-works in Fechenheim, who was a patron of the arts and very charitable. He donated 1 million gold mark for the founding of the University of Frankfurt, was a member of the board of directors of the Rothschild library and managing director of the board of administrators at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut. He funded the acquisition of works of art with generous donations and in 1899 set up a 150.000 mark art-fund with which, amongst others, the two Meunier-sculptures could be purchased.
